Nikon D300

Brought a new toy today, a Nikon D300 with grip and 50mm. Amazing camera to hold and use though i dont know the full lay out just yet. Can anyone give me a few pointers please? never owned a Nikon before allways used Olympus even in my film days.
 
Hi Chris and welcome to the D300 owners club :)

The D300 is an amazing camera but it is a professional model so don't expect using it to be easy - there are no automatic modes to fall back on. I would seriously recommend purchasing Thom Hogan's ebook on the D300 as it is a) easier to read than the Nikon manual, b) covers far more than the Nikon manual and c) provides suggestions for the various menu options with explanations for why you might choose each of the options.

I look forward to seeing some of your photos :)

Oh cool that sounds like a cool idea i thought the Manual looked really poor. Im used to manual modes as my Olympus E1 is basically the same, and i have seemed to have picked up most of the controls the only thing i dont like is the live view.

Yeah really like the layout of the Nikons very much like Olympus, really dislike the Canons layout though.
 
Can anyone recommend a good zoom lens for it? Need something that would do as good a job as I had with my Olympus 14-54mm F2.8

How much??? All prices below are second hand...

£100 - Nikon 18-70 - Best value zoom lens around
£200-£250 - Tamron 17-50 2.8 or 28-75 2.8
£550 - Nikon 17-55
£700 - Nikon 28-70 2.8
£900 - Nikon 24-70 2.8

That said the 24-120 f4 is not too shabby.

Take bits with a pinch of salt but Ken Rockwell can be worth a read.
 
I have been looking at the Tamron 17-50 2.8 on WEX looks pretty good. i have also been looking at the Sigma 15-50mm OS 2.8.

Should i be worried about VR, VC, OS and all that stuff?
 
Whether, or not, you need VR (or whatever else it's called) depends on how steady your hands are and what light you're shooting in. Most people can hand-hold okay provided they can keep the shutter speed above 1/1.5xthe focal length of the lens - if you're using a 50mm lens you would ideally want 1/80s shutter speed (50x1.5=75 so 1/80). Only you will know if you can do that.
 
Well i originally brought the D300 for lowlight so would that need VR? I'm pretty steady myself
