Ive been debating on what DSLR to buy, and ive finally decided to get a D3000. I was going to go with the body and a 18-55m lens for £350.

Ive now decided to get the body for around £300, and but another lens with it, id like somthing that has a little more zoom than an 18-55, but i still want to shoot wide angle aswell. Im willing to pay £150-200 for the lens, but the cheaper the better. Advice on the best i can get for around that price please?

Dean.

I also have a D3000 and am looking at what lenses I could purchase on a tight budget. So far the best one that is reasonably priced is the AF-S 18-105 VR ED. Think they're currently selling for around £199 brand new.

Nikon 18-70mm is well within your budget... Then again which lens's do you want - Nikon, Tamron or Sigma

I'll second the 18-70mm.....fantastic lens with a bit more reach. Also better made than the 18-105 too in having a metal lens mount and not being made entirely from plastic.

I have the 55-200mm lens and its great. There is a lot more expensive 55-300mm but Ive read in my camera books that it may not be worth paying the extra for the 100mm, but Im sure some will debate that. For a good price the 55-200 is a nice lens, and I got some good aircraft shots at Farnborough with it, but would have liked a bit more reach with it when the planes were doing displays, it really came into play when they were taking off/landing. I guess it depends on what your uses are also!

D3000 + 18-55 kit lens and the 55-200mm at £114, still withing budget? cover wide angle and moderate TP . . . Not the best, but not the worst, and at a budget price. The other option might be one of the 18-200 super zooms, if it needs to be in one lens from Sigma, Tamron?

Might bush the budget a bit to much?

If it were me, I'd go 18-70mm . . . its what I use!

18-70 is the pick, or the 18-105 if you need longer. the 18-70 has the better IQ though.

Decided to go a little over my £500 budget, its about £550 for the D3000 and the 18-105 VR. Im going to go for that.

i hope you dont mind my 2p worth..before you spend £550

the D3000 has some poor reviews and Ken Rockwell [ love his reviews or hate them !] says this about the 18-105

(c) "The photos are nice and sharp most of the time, but if you're looking closely, the 18-105mm is Nikon's fuzziest lens in the corners at 18mm. Even the $100 18-55mm is better. "
and
"The D5000 offers the technical image quality of Nikon's best DX cameras like the D300s and D90"

have a look at a Nikon D5000 with 18-55mm VR
i recently got mine from Comet for £479

later consider a 55-200 VR ...or better/expensive 70-300 VR

HTH ...john

Somthing else to consider, if the D3000 reviews are bad. Although ive only heard good things from people that use them.

Well its another month untill i purchase my SLR, so i can keep looking!

perhaps "bad" was a bit harsh - lets say for a little more the D5000 is much better...............do realize we all have a budget too..

you can read KR reviews ..."D5000"

and use the "Search" at the top of the page to find D3000, 55-200 VR...etc

this is also a very good review......"here"

Been reading reviews and thinking.

Im going to go with what you suggested John, and get a D5000 with the 18-55mm VR. Later on when ive got the spare cash, ill purchase another lens.

Thanks.

you'll not be disappointed..:D

there's a D5000 thread going here - have a look

lots of recommendations for the 18-70 above

you could easily sell the 18-55
or perhaps find a D5000 body only in the first place.........
