Hey Guys, I'm Looking at a Nikon D3000 for christmas and wondering if it's worth waiting until february to get the D5000, do any of you guys have an examples of images taken on any of these two camera's?
i know that the 5000 can shoot HD video and has 12megapixels, it also has live view which is a perk too but i shoot mainly portraiture and i'm still only young.
any suggestions?
thanks
luke :)

Always nice to have that extra space to grow into (i.e. 12mp and HD vid), if I was you I'd go for the 5000.

But then I've done nothing but shoot video with my 500d since getting it, oh how I've missed messing around in Adobe After Effects.

Also, live view is pretty handy sometimes but I never use it unless setting up a shot to help check focus (I guess that could be handy for you).

i'm thinking that the 5000 would be the immediate choice, i can pick it up for only £100 pounds more, and with the added features it seems to be the better solution, but i do need a DSLR very quickly and i don't know if it's the sensible idea, thank you for your opinion

5000 , but i think a tad expensive for what it is.

had a look at one, but i am sticking with my d80 thanks.
Secondhand may be the way forward for you,you may get a s/h 5000 only weeks old and save a packet.
i would shop around before parting with your cash.

Well i'd say D90 too but i don't think it's win the budget, Please Do remember the D3000 and D5000 do not have AF motors in the Body, not sure it make a huge difference but depends what your plans and what you might want to shoot as you'll have to buy lens with the AF motor in them

VERY good point, didn't realise that. That's the exact reason I dumped my D40 and moved to Canon lol.

thanks very much for the ideas guys, i think i'm going to see how much i get after christmas and then make my decision based on that, if i get loads then maybe a d90, but i think i'm after the d5000. if i don't get much i'll get the 3000, i just want to be taking pictures as soon as possible and sharing them with you guys.
thanks again :)

I've got the D5000, had it about 6 weeks now & I'm chuffed to bits, cant say what it's like compared to others as i'm fairly new to DSLR's aswell.

Whatever you decide on shop around for it, my local camera shop had the D5000 at £699, went to LCE in Plymouth and the had the same camera & kit lens for £529.

Good luck.

Have you thought of buying 2nd-hand?

As you've pointed out, you want to start shooting as soon as possible; then may be a 2nd-hand D80 / D90

However, one thing to keep in mind, be it D3000, D5000, D40, D80 .... they're all very good. They will all have their limitations, but they are all very very good as well.

Personally, I'd suggest you get one as soon as you can; just choose between what you can afford new vs. 2nd-hand.
