Nikon D3000 USB connectivity problem?

I usually transfer my images to my computer using a card reader, but I've just tried using the USB lead with this camera and Windows XP does not seem to want to know it. It bing bongs as though it's fine then a message to the effect that your new hardware might not work correctly appears.
I've not loaded the Nikon capture software as all my other cameras are/were recognised by XP without any software
In the Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device manager I get an exclamation mark in a yellow circle next to the DSC in imaging devices.
I know it is not important as I use a card reader but I'm just one who wonders why it does not work as it should.
Any help gratefully received. Thanks.
 
I don't own one of these bodies, however every Nikon body I have owned has two options for connecting to a computer in the cameras menu.

I hope that this may help solve your problem:

By checking if it's set to "mass storage" or "PTP" in the menu, if it's set to "mass" the computer should see it as if it were an external drive, a double click on the cameras icon should open the files folder to allow you to get to the images on the camera.
 
Hmmm. Don't know much about Nikon cameras cos I'm a canon man. However, XP is has limited driver support and often it will be just using one to do the job!

It is always better to use the designated driver in this case Nikon driver for your camera and from what I've just read it should use the ptp mode.

go to the link below, read the info surrounding the use of, download the driver and install and it should work fine then.
