Nikon D300s memory card problems.

Evening everyone.

I have been using a 4GB Sandisk CF in my D300s for a week or so now, nothing has happened to the camera during this time and this evening I put another Sandisk card into my camera (the card worked fine last week) and an error popped up on screen telling me the card wasnt recognised. I removed it and put it back in and this time it told me to format it, which I did in camera to no effect. The same happens with 2 other CF cards which all need 'formatting'

If I put these cards in my card reader they all are not recognised by my mac yet they all worked perfectly fine a short while ago.

Im getting slightly concerned now as to what the problem might be, either £100 in memory cards or maybe more with an in camera problem.

The camera is under a year old and about 12k on the clock but I'm hoping its a simple fix.

FWIW when the cards are entered into the camera, the top LCD instead of displaying images left displays (FOR) telling me to format, which when I do it has no effect, I have put a fully charged battery in and have tried to search the problem but was hoping someone here has the answer.

UPDATE, while I wrote this I left the camera and now all but one CF card are working after formatting, although they didnt first time.

One card still refuses to format and work.

I also accidentally bit one of my CF cards the other day when sat in the dark thinking it was a biscuit.. *shakes head at stupidity* the card still works and is one of the working ones and is only slightly dented, should I stop using this card incase it is having an effect on the card slot on the camera etc?
 
strange why a sandisk should be playing up, i know i had some weird going ons with a transcend memory card last year but found loads of people with the same card having probs, so got a sandisk and not had probs since, its a shame no one isnt close enough to try formatting the cards for you on theirs and do some tests side by side
 
how many memory cards do you have!!! lol i have 1 x 8gb CF and 1x 4gb SD in the d300s cant say i`ve ever filled them up
 
Sorry for the delayed reply, been busy shouting and swearing :lol:

All the cards now work after being persistent with each one. I am glad but still concerned why it happened in the first place. I wonder if I should stop using the dented card just incase?

Also could it be a problem with the camera that I need to follow up or should I ignore what has happened.

As for trying to eat a Sandisk, I have some serious issues :lol:
 
Did you format the cards 'in camera'?

Did you buy the cards from a reputable source?

I've seen somewhere that Sandisk have replaced cards that have developed faults. (though I can't remember where I read that) So worth getting in touch with them if they are genuine Sandisk cards.

You must have powerfull bite to dent a CF card. :eek:

And no sense of taste or touch to realise it wasn't a biscuit. ;) :lol:

The cards where formatted in camera. This didn't work for quite some time but then worked :s

The cards came from Amazon themselves, I wasn't having a problem with the dented card but I wonder if its not worth using it?
 
I would say if it happening with more than one card than it is probably a camera problem :(

Hope your camera is still under warranty, though Nikon hopefully 'should' do something about this it it isn't.
 
At the moment all is fine, I would much rather not send it off anywhere if I dont have to but know if this happens again in the future its sure to be when its least convenient.

Hoping it was just a strange one off..
 
Ive never heard of this problem with the D300S and CF reader in Camera but it was a common problem with the older D70, Ive had 4 D70s and a couple of them had flakey CF Readers, one or more of the pins in the Camera got pushed slightly down, this resulted in sporadic CF card errors, sometimes it wouldnt write to the card, sometimes the card would Error on insertion, usually taking the card in and out would solve the problem

When you were having the issue did u try the SD slot in the D300s just to make sure it purely the CF slot that was the problem
 
I didn't actually try the SD at the time which was stupid but I have tested it since with no hassle. Im hate to admit but it looks like it may have been the camera, at the moment all is working okay and I'm still trying to look further into the issue.
 
The two button press doesn't work for me to clear the card, I have to do it through the menu each time.

Well that doesn't sound right. Looks like something is wrong in the camera. I know it is not nice to be without the camera, but problems like that don't fix themselves, can happen randomly and are best fixed. It's up to you though. :shrug:

I wouldn't like to be out all day, or worse still on holiday, and lose all the pictures. :eek:

Hmmm, might have to find out a bit more as to where I stand about getting it checked.

Edit: Just to clarify, if I have a card with images on in my camera, I do the two button press format on the camera and it flashes 'format' at me for a few seconds on the top LCD but the images dont get removed like if I format in the menu.

Is that normal?

Have you used this method before?

I press both buttons to get format flashing on the LCD, and then press them again to confirm. I think that may be your problem, not pressing again to confirm the format.

And just to add another wrinkle, if you have a D300S you can turn the rear after pressing the two format buttons the first time to choose between the CF or SD card. Pressing the two buttons again will format whichever card is chosen.

Thank you very much. That is my problem :bonk: I wasn't pressing them the second time, which I just checked and works :thumbs:

Thanks all :) Hopefully it was just a random thing, still concerned but no particular rush to follow it up.

Must read instruction manuals in the future and must not try to eat memory cards :cuckoo:
