Nikon D300s with 80-400mm G. ??

Hi All
Just a quick question, I have been looking at purchasing the newer Nikon 80-400mm G lens, but I have read mixed reviews,
I also have a Nikon D300s , and would like to know if this would be a good combination for primarily wildlife photography.
Also would there be any issues using a Nikon 1.4 Tele Converter with this combination. Presently I have the Nikon 300mm f4lens.

Not so sure the TC would be any good with the 80-400mm, you would lose AF anyway and would be shooting at f/8 at the longer end

You would never have the IQ of the 300mm plus 1.4x

Have you considered the Nikon 1.7x TC with your D300 and 300mm f/4, you would be shooting f/6.3 but still have AF and very good IQ

This combo would certainly yield far better results than the D300 with the 80-400mm plus TC (if the TC fits)
 
I would recommend strongly the 1.7x Converter for your 300mm f/4, I currently use the 300mm f/4 with 1.7x converter for birding on my D700's and D300, Be warned though when there isn't good light the lens struggles on the D300 and focus is not as good as on the D700 but on a nice day for example you can track a Lapwing or Curlew something like that speed of bird on a nice day on the D300/s. that is what I found from months of use, view my flickr all photos in the past 4 months or so are taken with the D700 or D300 with 300mm f/4 AF-S and TC-17E II Converter, It is a great sharp set up and shoots really nicely wide open at f/6.7 and the reach it gives you is huge ( 750mm - f/6.7 on the D300s )
