Nikon D3100 blurry pictures

I have the nikon d3100 and i have been having problems lately,it will be taking pictures just fine,then all of a sudden i will click to take a picture,all is in focus,i click the shutter button,then click,i just get a total blurr,can't make the picture out at all.i am using my sigma 70-200mm f2.8 lens,it seems to be doing this more and more,started off jut now and again,but now if i shoot say 600 pictures it will do it maybe 20 times,anyone else experienced this.

First thing to do would be to link a sample shot with EXIF, and we can see. Common issues to exclude first

VR (but not here)
is Auto ISO accidentally off?
Shutter speed too slow
Camera body issue (have you other lenses to try?)
Lens issue (as above)
 
Yep, need a sample to determine if misfocus or camera settings not right.

Do you see the blur through the viewfinder? If so, you got misfocus - the Sigma will have failed to lock on and hunts through the entire range to re-aquire.
 
From what i can remember is the shot through the viewfinder is in focus,it seems that when i click the shutter button something happens and it all goes out of focus,i usually delete them after looking to see if i have a pic still
 
As per the others - we'd need to see an example

take a test shot - make sure it's in focus in the viewfinder - then pop it up here

tell us what your focus settings are: AF? single point? etc

If not sure use a camera phone to take a picture of the back of your cameras settings
 
99.9% of the time it's fine but in most shoots i get it,i am trying to see if i have kept a pic to post

The exit info, if I'm reading correctly, suggests a focus point around 4.2 million kilometres away- so looks like its just a depth of field issue- stop down a bit ;-)

If the focus is moving that far out then it might be trying to relock as you're pressing the shutter. Might be worth trying back button focusing for a little while and separate the focus from the shutter to see if it goes away.
 
what,and how do you use back button focusing??i have heard of it but not really tried it.

Also something i have noticed with the camera lately is when i look at the screen,the f stop just says f---,then it will come back,i am wondering if maybe its a problem with the seating of the lens to the body.

In the camera menus you set the ae lock button as the focus button so the camera will only autofocus when this is pressed. Google back button focus d3100 and there's at least one short YouTube clip showing how to set. Not near my d3100 just now to lookmt where it sits in the menu options

From your second paragraph then it might be contacts or seating though
 
Agree with Jim-Tod - its probably the communication between the lens and the camera

usual error checking next...

if it happens with all lenses - its the camera

if its good with all lenses except one - it's the lens

is it still in warranty?

It's lens or camera then and you're probably not in warranty - unless someone gave you a long warranty?
Repair job probably - does it happen on the kit lens?

That'll tell you where the problem is
