Nikon D3100 flash

I'm looking to get a (preferably cheap) half decent flash, nothing too special. Can anyone recommend something? I'll mainly be using it for portraits if that helps.

Also whilst we're on the subject, how on earth do I manually choose to use flash on my D3100? In the flash settings I can only change it to "auto, off, auto red eye".

Really depends on how cheap you want to go.

You have the options of jessops 360ad flash, nissin Di 622, Yongnou. Search the forum I am sure some has recently asked a similar question.

You can't manually choose flash on Auto setting.

The cheapest Nikon (SB-400) sits nicely atop the D3100, its a good size fit.

If you have the camera in auto or some of the scene modes, it determines whether flash is on or off. If you have it in A, S, or P you control the flash. If you want flash on, flip it up. If you want it off, click it down.
