Nikon d3100 lens advice

Hi everyone

I'm quite new to photography and have had my Nikon d3100 for a few months now but would like to get some more lenses for it. It came with the standard 18-50mm lens. I was just wondering what lens do you think would be a good one to get next? A lot of the pics I take are of my daughter but do want to experiment with different settings and objects. Thinking a zoom or macro lens first but would like some advice on them or if anyone thinks a different lens would be better please feel free.

The 35mm f1.8 is a fun lens and great for 'kid pix'. Cheap too!

Welcome to TP.

Agree with Andy above, the 35mm is an very good lens for low light use with kids. If you want a zoom have a look at the 55-200 VR which is a good budget lens.

Please be aware that not every Nikon fit AF lens will AF on your camera body - it needs Nikon AF-S, Sigma HSM or other lenses with the AF motor in the lens rather than relying on the in body motor of older or higher end Nikon bodies. More and more AF-S type lenses are being produced these days and there seem to be plenty on the 2nd hand market too.

Thanx for your advice I've been looking at the said lens and it is really cheap and looks good. May have to be the next purchase

I have a d3100 and the 35mm f1.8 afs G was the first lens I bought and its brilliant. You think that the kit lens is good until you have a play with one of these then you realise it's in a different league.
