Nikon D3100 or Canon 1100D

Hi
A friend of mine has asked about the D3100 or 1100D and which one would I recommend. As I have a Nikon D300 myself I tend to favour the Nikon also looking at reviews the nikon tends to come out very slightly better. Has anyone had a closer look at these two cameras and give any more hands on experience particularly the guide menus.
