Im wondering if anyone can help, i own a nikon d3100 and im looking to take some self take trophy shots while im fishing, i know they dont support a remote and nikon's wired switch only has a 1 metre cable, i'd guess i probably need 3 metres to be safe. Can you get an extension cable for the offical switch or can you buy one with a longer lead?. The only one's with longer leads are made by a third party and im not sure after reading some reviews that they are really up to the job.

Also has anyone ever used any air bulb release systems, are they worth looking at?.... how much control do you have over the shutter ie- can you auto focus with one?

any help would be appreciated.

I think for fishing you would be better/safer with a wireless remote. I use a Phottix Cleon II which I find excellent - you can use it either wired (shortish cable for tripod use) or wireless up to 100 metres. Using it wired doesn't need any battery power.

They make different cable connectors for different cameras, so if you change camera at some stage or want to share with a friend you can just buy another cable.

I used to use an air bulb release with a film camera but that was years ago - it just screwed into the shutter button. Camera was manual focus.

I really don't think you want to mix long cable releases with fishing! Also, you would get the cable in your shot, whereas the wireless ones have an optional delay so that you can stuff it out of sight before the photo is taken.
 
Doesn't the D3100 support IR remotes? I thought it did?
 
I was thinking about a D3100 having finally convinced myself that I could manage without a D90, although that is what I would really like, are you saying the ML-L3 Nikon remote release won't work on the D3100?

As far as im aware it doesnt support the ML-L3, although there seems to be a few 3rd party jobbies about.....im just not sure which one to buy:shrug:
 
The self timer can be set from the top of the camera, no need to go through the menu system. I've found it far more useful the the wireless remote I was used to.

Yes, the ML-L3 will NOT work on the D3100......cable release only or third party remote. But deffo no inbuilt IR receiver.
