I am going on safari in November and have ordered a battery grip for my D3100. for the shutter button on the battery grip to work, I need to connect a cable from the battery grip into the GPS port (just like when I use a remote shutter cable) which means the cover will be constantly open.

As I will be on safari, I am worried about the other ports normally protected by this cover being open to the elements and thus damaging the camera and the actual cover becoming a hindrance. So I am wondering if anyone is aware of a way I can remove the cover (without destroying it as I would like to be able to put it back on) so I can cover the unused ports with duct tape to protect them.

I have done a quick google search but that only seemed to show replacement covers (but not in enough detail to show how it is attached to the camera and camera reviews.

I would be very grateful for any advice on this that anyone can give me.

its only suggestion, but if you got an exact replacement of the usb/gps etc cover, eg this

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Nikon-D31...163?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item3f18915853

then on the spare one just cut a small hole roughly the right size for the mini usb connector to fit through and connect, so in essence you will have the rest of the ports covered because the flap is closed, however i dont know how to remove it though..

just a random suggestion.

I hadn't thought of that but that could be a really good way of doing it. I'll look into that. Cheers :)

If anyone's interested, I've found out that you can just pull it off and it doesn't break it as long as you pull it directly away from the body.
