Nikon D3200 lens compatibility?

Sorry in advance if this has been asked before but here goes.
My better half has a rather aged Nikon D50 and i'm looking at getting her a D3200 from Santa. She has got an 18-55mm AF-S lens ,that looks like its compatible. But she also has a Sigma 70-300 APO lens which works fine on her D50 ,but I cant find any information about wether the auto-focus etc will still work on the D3200.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. If its not compatible then I may keep my eye out for a kit that includes the 55-300 VR lens that looks really good.Might be out my price range though.
 
There are different versions of the 70-300 so it may depend on wethet the lens has a built in motor. The cheaper Sigma 70-300s normally didn't.

I know what you mean on a D3200 kit with a 55-300, that would have pushed me over budget with my GFs new camera.
 
Thanks for the quick replies Ken and Stu. That table doesn't list Sigma I'm afraid Ken. And I don't think it has a motor in it Stu,it only cost about £70 a couple of years ago.
I wish I had looked for some "Black Friday" deals but didn't have the idea til Sunday! Maybe hold off til January sales that start Xmas day at 6pm instead.;)
 
All Nikon AF-S will work.

All the Sigma APO 70-300 I have seen are all have built in AF motors and will fully work. I do not know if they did a earlier version that used a camera body AF motor but if they did it would still work but be manual focus only. I would not overly worry anyhow as the Sigma APO 70-300 are very cheap used. If yours does not have a AF motor you could sell and buy one with it. I just sold my one for £35 for example.
 
Robin, somewhere on the Sigma will be a string of letters, possibly Sigma 70-300 DG APO etc. If the lens has a built in motor, this string will include HSM (which stands for Hyper Sonic Motor) which would mean it does have a motor in the lens. Another way to tell is to look at the mount to see if there's a screw head - if there is, the lens won't AF on the 3200. The pictures below show the difference between the 2 types.

I have a Sigma 70-300 f/4-5.6 APO DG macro and it does auto focus on my D3100. When I saw it advertised locally I wasn't sure it would but went to look at it anyway.
Fairly certain it doesn't have the Hyper Sonic Motor but certainly works fine.
