Nikon D3S FX Lens Recommendations

Hi All,

I have just upgraded from a Nikon D2H to a D3S. With the d2h I used a nikon 17-55mm f2.8 dx lens. What comparison f2.8 lens would you recommend for the d3s fx body.

The reason I ask is I have a AF 17-55mm f2.8 DX lens at the moment. I know the D3S has a DX lens crop mode feature but when using the 17-55mm lens I get vignetting in the corners caused by the lens hood, does this not happen with the 24-70mm f2.8 lens.

Apologies for sounding thick but I am :shrug:
 
No, the 24-70 is an FX lens, and so does not suffer from such a problem... It's not a feather of a lens, but then neither is the D3*
love mine and would never sell it

the D3 series recognise a DX lens on the bayonet and automatically shoot in "DX crop mode".

You might see vignetting in the viewfinder, but you won't in the final image because you will get what is in the cropped view as the final image. I haven't used a DX on a D3 series, but t says about it in the manual....stick your 17-55 on the front, shoot a subject that you can tell what was in the finder aginst what you get in the image and see. I am sure the image will will be a cropped, DX one - is there an inner frame line that appears when you mount the 17-55? To show the actual "taking view" of the DX crop.

Hi Simon, Thanks for the reply. You are correct if Auto DX Crop mode is selected in the menu the D3S recognises DX Lens, but looking through the view finder the cropped area is very small. You can also set it to 5:4 DX mode where only the edges of view are blacked out. Using my D2H you had full frame at all times, it just feels strange not being able to see and use full frame with the D3S using DX lens. I know I will have to use 5:4 DX mode if I keep my 17-55mm f2.8 lens, so it's either that or change it for the 24-70mm f2.8 which is FX compatible.

Yes there is but it is considerably smaller than the actual full frame view.

Nikkor 24-70 and an old 17-35 f/2.8 (if like me you don't like the new 14-24 f/2.8).
 
Quite honestly, you're mad to stick a dx lens on a camera like the D3s. Why spend all that money and not put wonderful fx glass on it?

The original plan was to purchase a D300S, which would have left funds available for an FX lens, but in the end decided to go the whole hog and purchase the D3S instead. The plan now is to sell off a bit of camera gear to fund the purchase of a used Nikon D300S and a good used 24-70mm f2.8 FX lens. I have 2 x Nikon D2H bodies in excellent condition and the 17-55mm f2.8 AF DX lens in mint condition, that I can sell BUT can't sell them here as I'm not allowed to post in the classified section yet as I only have 9 posts to my name :bang:

Sorry if I have broken any rules regarding my camera gear for sale.

Hi Grotty,

Thanks for the plug, but can't do anything until I have sold some of my gear and at the moment I'm unable to post gear for sale in the classifieds as I only have a post count of 12.
