Hi
Just had an estimate from Fixation for fixing my D3s. issue isthe shutter not working, appeared to freeze, ERR message, then if you pressed a bit harder it released with what sounded like a gear releasing and then it would take a shot but not necessarily in focus, then the next shot would focus, then it would freeze again....really useful for showjumping! Thank god for back up camera!

I assume complete shutter box failure (only 80,000 actuations) and just wondered if anyone could advise why the other bits need replacing or are they all part of it? I can take the photos just don't understand the internal workings!

they have said
SHUTTER UNIT
I BASE PLATE UNIT
CHARGE BASE UNIT
GRIP RUBBER
A CONNECTOR SIDE
A APRON LOWER

job includes
General Service , Replace Parts as Described , Set up and recalibrate , Check and clean , Shutter , Sensor Clean , Focus System ,

I have asked them to give it a service and sensor clean whilst it was in there - may as well thoroughly bash the bank balance!

I'm not doubting their estimate just curious as to why the other bits needs replacing. I've tried googling for info but can only find the bits for sale not what they do!

Not yet as I was only able to view the quote today when I got home and therefore unable to contact them until Monday.

Naturally when I phone on Monday to okay the repair I'll ask but I was just curious if any of the more technical minded chappies were able to explain - I like to understand what I'm paying for :D

so if the shutter isnt working why do they need to do all the non shutter work? whats a new base plate got to do with anything? Ask them for a quote just for the shutter.

the rubber grip bit is standard as these tend to fall off over time, so they replace them. I expect you can get out of the rest. When I get mine done its about £180 i think.

Thanks guys, that's what I wondered re the base plate etc but needed confirmation as I wasn't sure how those bits all fitted together! Quote has come to £675 so I wouldn't mind if they could knock it down it bit !

Just thought I'd give an update on this - queried the replacement if the I BASE PLATE UNIT and CHARGE BASE UNIT and had the answer below

"I can understand the confusion, but please be assured neither part relates in any way to the sensor cleaning function, nor should they be confused with the camera’s bottom cover. In fact, the charge and I base units are both part of the shutter assembly, I’m afraid, so these are also needed as part of the shutter mechanism repair (one charges the shutter and sequence mechanism and therefore allows the shutter, mirror and aperture mech to do their bit when the button is pressed and the other is a gearing mechanism involved in the same operation)"

So no reduction on estimate unfortunately.
.

£675 is a fair chunk of change but think of the mileage and use you will be able to get out of it with a new shutter mechanism.... I assume the work comes with a warranty too?

I had a pleasant surprise when they sent the final invoice through today as it seems the shutter unit didn't need replacing afterall just the other bits so it came to less than £500 thankfully!

Ha ha yes- it's been an expensive couple of weeks, repairs on this one, bought another D3S with low shutter count which will be main one now, plus bought new pc...I am now officially broke so best get shooting & selling!
