Is it necessary to use Lightroom 4 to open these files? Also can you purchase an upgrade from Lightroom 3 to 4 and is it a success?

LR 4 is slower than LR3 I found.

No its not, but you will need a RAW convereter of some sort, unless you use Adobe's DNG converter and convert them to DNG.
LR4 as all newer program will need more processing power but I do find some of the tools - notabaly the Highlight and Shadow sliders to be a able to give you more detail in the image - so in my case yes.
But if you want to use LR3 you best bet is probaly to use the DNG converter and convert the RAW files to DNG and then import to LR3

When I try to import the RAW files into LR3 it says over each image 'preview not available'. I have downloaded adobe 6.7 and RAW images open fine in CS5

Not 100% sure on this but I think that LR camera raw support is built into the program, so unlike CS you can't update the RAW support by downloading the adobe 6.7.
There is a thread on Adobe Community about this here

Is it fully up to date? Do the files open in the develop module or not at all?

It might be that LR3 doesnt support the D4 RAW's but I would have thought the most up to date version would.
If it doesnt, then you can update from 3 to 4 very easilly, and cheaper than buying 4 Outright.

In order to use Lightroom for D4 files, it needs to version 4. The previous version (3.6) has no support for D4 or the D800/D800E.
Personally I think it is ridiculous that Adobe don't allow upgrades to the programme when a new camera is launched, but that's the way they work.

They allow updates when new cameras come out, and LightRoom gets more updates than Adobe Camera Raw over the lifetime of the product, as LR gets a new version less often than CS*, they just don't support newer cameras on older versions of the software. And they do tell you which version works with the new updates.

At least they offer the option of allowing RAW files to be converted to their DNG format which are compatible with any version of ACR or LR. As long as the DNG Converter is up to date of course.

It's not ideal, and I'm sure we'd all want free update forever, but they have to off an incentive to people to purchase the new versions of their software to recoup their costs.

Just bought Lightroom 4 today, because of this issue. Lightroom 3 will not open D4 files.

Kev.

Hi Kev glad to see you jump into the fray. It seems LR3 is no longer of use to me so an upgrade looks the only solution, its cheaper than buying LR4. Mind you have read about a few people who have had difficulty with the upgrade. Do you think it is OK to go ahead and buy the upgrade? merv

It should be Merv. After all, it is an upgrade! Not sure why people are having problems. I tend to use CS6 most of the time. But for what it cost, I thought I would have a bash at LR4.

Kev.

Kev it is reckoned to be best to carry out initial adjustments in LR then export to PS for the rest of the tinkering. Enjoy the Lakes
