Nikon D4 with 2 x converter

and 200-400mm f4.

It was slightly windy,bit murky and handheld.First time out with camera. So still discovering it.
One of the reasons for buying it, was for the ability to focus at f8 with a converter bolted on. I wanted to see if it could do what they claimed. Focus was fast and accurate.

I'm looking forward to mastering this beast and some decent weather. I could see this set up being good for birders with a decent tripod and gimbal.

A bit of contrast and sharpening has been done.

oops, was concentrating on the converter. Should look a bit better now.
 
That's better.Makes my comment look rather silly though LOL.

Is the combo something you think you would use often?
I used to use my 400 F5.6L on my 1D4 with a 1.4 Tcon attatched all the time because I could AF at F8 but eventually realised I could get better "easier" shots by just sticking the 400 on a 7D.Shooting at F8 was a real chore sometimes.

Well, I found myself using the 300mm 2.8 with the 2 x regularly. I was very impressed with that set up. I'm willing to give it a try and work at it. It's the flexibilty of having 400-800mm should I need it.
I'm never going to stop using primes, but there may be occasions when I will use this with confidence.
I was impressed how fast it could focus. Faster than my D300 would with the 200-400mm on it's own.
I'll decide after I've got used to the set up and tried it in better weather.
