nikon D40 and sigma 150-500mm

Hi! My friend wants to buy sigma 150-500mm for his birds shoots and saffaris. He own NIKON D40. question is: before he spend £650 is this lens will work with his bodY? is there any AF probles as this is big lens and old body. Sorry guys. I dont know nothin about nikons so I am asking you
