So after going all over and looking at diffrent deals etc.....
i feel as a newbie to photography the nikon d40 seems a good starting place.

What are peoples thoughts on this camera plz?
thanks newbie wendy.x:D

added now i have decided on a d40

what i will need for portait/family shots and landscape maybe hubby on track.

thanks wendy.

I just upgraded from a D40 to a D90. The D40 was an excellent starter camera and I was very pleased with it. Personally I don't think you can go wrong with one as a starter.

Hi Wendy,

I use one , its a great camera for the money, the only downside is needing the AF-S
lenses with the motor in the lens to auto focus. They can be quite pricey.
I hope this helps.

They are great. Need to use AFS lenses with it if you want autofocus as it doesn't have a lens motor in the body.

Ken loves his:

I bought a D90 to replace mine but after using both I prefer the D40 for it's compact size, light weight and ease of use. So I plan to sell the D90.

thanks both for the reply but Jeeno that means nothing to me at present lol.... i really do need to learn what all the terms mean lol....

There is a D60 & kit lens in the classifieds and also a D40x kit as well. Buying used is a very cheap way to your first dslr.

Not really true anymore. There are plenty of affordable AF-S lenses around.

I think you quoted the wrong message PsiFox, I didn't say they were expensive!
;)

You're right plenty of AFS bargains around.

So I did silly me:bonk:

Coupled with the great 18-70 AF-S, that's an outstanding combination for the price, size and weight.

I've used that combination for a good while, and still keep my D40 tucked away for "just in case"; even though I now use a D60 as a back-up.

So now i am more than sure this is what i want any idea where to buy it from? cheers wendy.

its a very capable camera, nice to use...

took this yesterday, 35mm f1.8 lens...

I do love my D40. Had it for over a year now and it's a great starter camera. I'm looking to upgrade to something more beefy, like a D90, but I'll still keep the D40 as a spare body as it really is very capable.

the nikkor 35mm f1.8 afs is a good fast all round lens which wont break the bank. the 18 - 55 zoom lens that comes with it is a decent bit of kit as well...

try ffordes photographic for 2nd hand, warehouse express for new...

The D40 is a cracking camera for the money. It is now discontinued so you will be lucky to find any new stock anywhere. The for sale section on here has a few that might tempt you. Although you don't get any warranty the benefit of buying from here is that they are mostly from genuine enthusiasts who look after the kit.

Good luck and enjoy

ps you can buy from the for sale forum on here before the 30 days/ 100 post mark you just can't sell on it.
