I was hoping that someone would be kind enough to help me. I am trying to get the best possible shots I can get and feel the thing thats letting me down is the settings I have. I am using a Nikon D40 with a Sigma DG 70 - 300 lens set in normal mode(also has a Macro 200-300 mode). I am planning a trip to the zoo this week but also need the settings to work without too much tinkering for Motorsport.

The internal settings are as follows:
JPEG Normal
Large image size
White Balance I manually adjust depending on the conditions
ISO is set at 200
Noise Reduction is off
Focus Mode is Auto-Servo AF
Auto Focus Area Mode is Dynamic Area
Shooting mode is continous(due to Motorsport photography)
Metering is Center Weighted
Auto focus assist is on
ISO Auto is on

And on the Dial on top it is set to M.

Also when taking photos my camera seems to focus more to the right then the center. Is there a way to stop this?

Thank you for any help.

Is this with moving targets? ...are you using AF-C -- continuous AF?

When you focus do you only get the right hand focus box illuminating?

Then use the 4-way button to centre it.

You may have selected the "single point" function in AF-A - ??

Assuming your shutter speeds are fast enough, even with animals you might need higher than you think, this does seem strange. ...but you're shooting motorsport ok. I'd be looking to see if there's something common in the cases where you get the focus problem - is there a more obvious focus target just off centre - remember it's not a focus 'point'. Maybe post an example or two.

I've seen threads where people say AF-C behaves more like they were expecting than AF-A so might be worth a try. ...but again, if you're having success with motorsport.

M=Manual
why not select S = shutter speed and select 1/250 for shooting 300mm at Motorsport

I use JPEG Fine - better IQ as less compression in camera
