Yes
what lenses fit the nikon d40
a friend has one and they would like to get a longer lens to go with the kit lens
also what is nikons version of image stabiliser called
i know b****r all about nikon cameras (come to think of it i know sod all about canon camera's either )

Pretty much every Nikon F-mount lens will fit a D40, but the usual advice is to go for something like the 55-200mm VR (that's Nikon's version of IS) at around £160

af-s apparantly to auto focus...?- same as my d60 was and now my d5000....

sucks.
someone correct me if im wrong.....

It's caled VR on the Nikons - Vibration Reduction.

Ken says this about the auto focus;

The D40 only autofocuses with the latest AF-S (and old professional AF-I) lenses. Most traditional (screw-type) AF lenses from 1986 through today will not autofocus on the D40. If your lens says "AF-S," you're fine.

Most lenses sold today for the D40 are AF-S, and so is the included 18-55mm kit lens. Many non-Nikon lenses from Tamron, Tokina, Quantaray, Sigma and anyone other than Nikon still won't autofocus on the D40. Try before you buy, but honestly, there isn't much the included 18-55mm lens won't do.

As long as the lenses state either AF-S (nikon), HSM(sigma) or IF(tamron) you're good to go.

thanks i will pass the info on
the 55-200mm VR could be the one for them

As others have said they are looking at AF-S lenses and would be wanting VR.

If they are looking for a longer zoom I would suggest looking at:

AF-s Nikon 55-200mm VR
AF-s Nikon 70-300mm VR
Sigma 70-300mm APO HSM

caveat - I only have the 55-200 so I'm suggesting the other two only from what I have read myself.

If I could afford it I would have got the Nikon 70-300. If they go for the Sigma then apparently the APO version is much better than the non-APO.

thanks for the extra info
i will pass it on to them this week and point them to here as well
