Nikon D40 or Canon 350D on a very limited budget?

Which do you think would be best to learn on and would give me better shot results?

I'm only looking to spend 150GBP

I'm sure this has been asked before but unfortunately I can't find the search function for the forum to look up old threads :'(
 
Neither, and both of them!!!

You'll learn all you need to know through spending time on here and asking questions, reading books and practising.

They are both as good as each other.
(And I should know as I've owned both :nuts: )

Have you physically handled both?
Sounds daft, but it does make a difference.
 
To be honest, it's six of one or half a dozen of the other. Canon owners will tell you to buy the 350 and Nikon owners the D40. Either will do the job, buy whichever one you feel the most comfortable with. If It sways you any, Kerso in the Trade Sales section here have a couple of brand new D40x bodies for not much more than your budget for a secondhand one.

Having said that, if you are on a very limited budget it would be worth having a look at Sony dslrs as well, you should be able to get a reasonably new camera and probably a lens for your £150....
 
Thank you for the quick replies... The reason I had the D40 and 350D in mind is basically because of budget. I really wanted the budget to cover both the body and the lens. Which Sony DSLR's are the equivalents so I know which to research?

I'm not bothered about being able to upgrade lenses in the future with whichever body I buy and even one with a busted flash would do me at the moment without papers and software etc.
 
You'll be pushing it to get a D40 and lens for £150, you might just get a 350D though. Sony-wise, the A100, A200 and A230 should all be just about in budget complete with kit lens.

A browse through the classifieds here (not sure if there is a minimum post/membership requirement to do this) should bring up a few possibles though.
 
On a budget go for the canon simply because you'll have more cheap lenses available. Whatever you say now I guarantee you'll want lenses in the future.
 
Yeah I've just had a quick look through ebay and I'm only able to find the A100 within budget. A200 and A230 are both quite a bit over. I saw a couple of 350D's go for around 245GBP.

I'll have a look through the classifieds on here now. Unfortunately yes there is a minimium post count if I wanted to post in the "wanted" section.
 
By the time I start wanting new lenses I will happily upgrade the body too at the same time. The chances are I won't be on as strict of a budget as I'll only be spending money on lenses when I'm working (which I currently am not.) That was my thinking behind not needing to be able to upgrade lenses on this body in particular.
 
Both are very able cameras and should get an example in your price range but I would plump for canon purely as they have a greater lens choice and all lens will auto focus
 
I would say Canon 350D on the basis of lens availability. Whilst you say you could change both body and lens in future, that may make the camera redundant, whereas I still have and use my 350D with my current lenses despite having subsequently upgraded the body, so I think it may be a mistake not to think future.
 
Thanks for your replies and advice guys : ) I've been caught trying to bend the rules and had this post edited by a moderator to remove my advert. I would list it in the classifieds but can't because of the limits on new users. Maybe I could swap it for a kit lens or something and then spend my budget just on a body!

Look at the 300D aswell, shouldn't have a problem getting a body and len's for 150
 
As Fozzy said handle them because I could not use my 350D without the handgrip and I know that the 40 is even smaller,having said that I loved my 350 and only really moved onto the 400D this year forb the bigger screen
 
I looked at both while ago when I got my first DSLR and went for the canon as it was better value for money and the 350D was better at high ISO
I've still got my 350D and still use it :)

Thanks for all your input guys, I went for a D40 in the end just because the opportunity came up to buy one. Just waiting for it to arrive now : ) hopefully should be here by wednesday or thursday!
