Hi

I recently bought a Nikon D40 as my first Digital SLR. I have been really happy with it apart from one problem.

Quite a few pictures i take at night look like there are blurred rain drops on the lens. The pictures were taken in completely clear weather and a clean lens but it looks like i was in the middle of a rain storm.

Any idea what could be causing this. It is only noticeable at night. i can email an example if needed

thanks

Well i just tried a night shot at iso3200 with my D40 and i don't see these rain drop effect ya talking about, just lots & lots of noise.

Your going to have to post some pics so we can see what your going on about.

How do you get to 3200 on a d40?? or is it the HI option?

Mine looks terrible!!! Auto ISO, perhaps?

use your gallery space here to host an example and show us what you mean. It does sound like a noise problem tbh. If you are using auto ISO, it might be setting i way too high, owever, with long exposures such as you would use at night would give some noise anyway.

It's not likely to be dust at f/3.5, which is what the EXIF data on that picture says.

I'd say clean your lens. It looks like spots on the lens which are picking up the bright spot lights and causing flare.

Yup, grease or dirt on the front element... get a lens cloth and give it a good clean.

Hi

I did have the flash on and I havent been changing the lens as I've only got the standard one which came with the camera.

I did try cleaning it but maybe I didnt give it enough elbow grease. Was just a bit worried it might be something technical going on inside.

Thanks for your help. I'm brand new to the world of DSLRs so I'm sure I'll have more problems in future but I'm enjoying playing around with it.

Its the flash lighting up dust specks in the air, you would not need the flash for that type of shot.

I have been doing yes, definitely did for that picture. I know thats a bit pointless with an SLR but i bought it just before my holiday so didnt get chance to learn all the tricks....

I'm pretty sure this is the answer.

Also not sure you should be putting too much "elbow grease" into cleaning the front element of your lens.
You need the correct cleaning equipment and a delicate touch.
