Hi all!

Bit of a newbie question but here goes!
I have a d40 and have been reading through the manual to find out wether or not it has auto bracketing/exposure bracketing but so far no joy.
Im wanting to try HDR photography so im wondering if you have to do it the manual way (eg take picture at -1.0,adjust to 0.0 take pic,then readjust to 1.0 take final pic)
If anyone else has a d40 or can help shed some light on this then it would be most appreciated

"Bracketing is the practice of taking shots above or below the indicated exposure for a given subject, a way to make sure that you get at least one properly-exposed image of difficult subjects. Most digital cameras these days offer some sort of automatic exposure bracketing, and all prior Nikon DSLRs did as well. We were thus rather surprised to find no option for bracketing on the D40. In our own shooting, we find ourselves using the auto-bracketing feature quite frequently. While it does give you three times as many shots to deal with on the computer later, it's a great hedge against lost detail due to blown exposures on tricky subjects. We recognize that Nikon was aiming for dead-simple usage on the D40, but auto exposure bracketing is a feature we think even relatively novice shooters could use and benefit from."

Hi Noodle,

I've shot HDR with the D40 in the past - not really a fan of the genre but wanted to try it for myself. You have to do the bracketting manually as the D40 doesn't have an automated facility.

My process was:
Put camera on tripod and frame shot.
set mode dial to Manual and adjust for correct exposure
take the first shot
adjust the shutter speed to give -1ev
take the second shot
adjust shutter speed again to give +1ev
take third shot

You can, of course, add more shots to the sequence and different ev adjustments - the most I ever bothered to try was 7 shots 1/3ev apart.

hi guys,thanks for the replies, i guess the good old 'get off your lazy ass and do it manually' thing comes into play here! lol no problemo just wanted to make sure i wasnt being a dumbass and missing something in camera
