Anyone got one?Good for a beginner?What would be its equivalent in the Canon range?

Had one....was my first dSLR and was a cracking little camera. Used it with the kit 18-55mm and the 55-200mm. Takes a great picture and ideal for a beginner. I think the Canon equivalent was/is the Eos 1000....not absolutely sure as I've always used Nikons.
 
My first DSLR as well. Fantastic little camera, takes great images, light and compact and fantastic to learn on.

Thanks for the replies.I've read the KRockwell reviews and he seems to think the D40 is the better value and better camera.I believe I would need lenses with a/f.Portrait, landscape and, telephoto.Any good value sharp lenses recommendations.I would want the " nifty fifty" for one.The body would be just under £200 new.There's also a used D200 for sale in classifieds.

Its a few years old now and been out of production for a little while.

Nothing wrong withthe D40 but I have aslo heard it said that the D40x wasn't worth the extra money.


£200 for the body is good value if it is new.

You say you want a 50mm lens to go with it. Well, one of those will wipe out most of the savings you'll make by going for the cheap body since you need a lens with the AF motor built in, so AF-S Nikkor or HSM Sigma. The Nikon lens is around £300 new and the Sigma is even more. Neither seem to be that common on the 2nd hand scene.

There's also a D5000 in classifieds.Wondering about good value with the 2 lenses abd extras.Presume it's a better camera than the D40x.

There is no motor in a D40 or D40x so if you want an auto focus lens you will need to buy one with a motor - hence the increase in price quoted.

Yup, the cheap and cheerful 50mm f/1.8 without the focus motor is closer to £100 but will not AF on the cheaper Nikon bodies (yes, MF is possible but a pain with the short arc of throw between close focus and infinity and no microprism/split screen focus aids). Plenty of the f/1.8 lenses around 2nd hand too.
 
Had a D40x as a back up to my D80, the D40x is a de-tuned D80. Absolutely brilliant camera, IMHO, a cross between a compact ie, lot of menu selection and a DSLR, it had a super viewfinder . . . wish I had not sold it . . . or the D80!

As the for a lens, the Nikon 18-55mm kit lens is good, however, IMHO, the lens I used with it was even better; Nikon made an early kit lens to go with the D70, its sharp, has its own focus motor and balances the D40x perfectly, Can be had for around £75-£85 on fleBay: 'AF-S Nikkor 18-70mm f3.5-f4.5'.

For a long lens, I used the Sigma 70-300mm APO HSM, again works well with the D40x, new from Bristol Cameras around £175.00?

D40x, is not perfect, but, if only I had my D40x, D80 combination now . . . :thinking: I go over the pictures I took with them, I have taken nothing better since??? . . .

D40x was/is my first DSLR, a great beginners camera, I currently have the Nikon AF-S 18-105mm VR, and the Nikon AF-S 70-300mm lenses for it, only reason I've thought about upgrading (to a D90 if I was going to) is to gain an improvement in low light conditions, a few more AF points (although not as important, I nearly always AF with centre point, then re-compose), and the gain of the AF motor, to allow me a greater choice of lenses with AF usable.

Just make sure, when looking for lenses for the D40x, that if it's Nikon, it's an "AF-S" lens, as the "AF" lenses need a motor in the body of the camera (which D40x doesn't have), or you'll have to manually focus it.
 
I love my d40x, learnt all my stuff on it. Plus it has a help guide on it! The 35mm is what i would reccomend it is about £160, the 50mm prime is uber expensive.

Im selling 2 lenses for it cheap aswell in the marketplace.

-D5000 used
-450D
-D90
-50D..more expensive.
- or any other suggestions welcome.
 
As a beginner, I would say get the D5000 over the D90, as it has the same sensor, but a few less "functions" so there's less to confuse you, yet still plenty to get good pictures. If the D5000 is within you budget, I would also recommend it over the D40x too.

Although I am biased towards Nikon, and know nothing about Canon, so you'll have to get someone else's opinion on those :P
