Been offered a mint D40X for £199 with 12 month warranty from a cam shop (Refurb) No lens

Nikon D3100 with kit lens £330

Is it still a good idea to get an older Nikon these days? Read good things about the D40x. Not sure though. They also have a 500D, minty for £275 body only 6 months warranty). Thing is, i already own a 50mm 1.8 lens (Canon).

I have moved from M43rds now.

I do need to have a DSLR that is good in low light and i know a lot of that comes down to lens choice too.

a d40x was my first digital slr great wee camera soid build quality and took really good pics,i now keep it as my holiday camera as im to scared to take my d300 abroad, go for the d40x you wont regret it

I just bought a secondhand D40x as my first DSLR last week and love it- it's so compact for a DSLR (feels nice in my hands) and the image quality is great even though it's five years old now. Recommended.

But- if you already have a canon lens, I'd be tempted to go with the 500d...depends on how cheap you can find a lens for the Nikon, I guess!

Not cheap as i have looked around.

Heard the 40x is not good in low light though?

My first camera was a D40x actually a very nice camera, iso was very usable up to 800.
I would never tell anyone not to buy a d40x as starter camera it is very good.

But the ergonomics were wrong for me i changed it for a Canon 30d, which i like much better and higher iso is a lot more usable.

The 3100 is a lot newer model so has better electronics etc and has a better iso performance as well as movie mode so if you like to shoot movies. hol vid etc it may be the better choice.

Also as you have a 50mm 1.8 the Canon would be a better choice as to buy a simlar lens for the nikon would cost about £200 ish. and for about £300 you could get a Canon 40d which is a cracking DSLR and would work with the 50mm you have allready to make a great combo.

But try if you can to hold the cameras first as how it feels in the hand can be really important.
