Just pulled this off the tinterweb rumour mill thingy.
That must be a misprint surely 173 focus points ! i would imagine the viewfinder to be a tad crowded and what would be the benefit of that amount anyway.
Unless there not all used at the same time, Still seems a tad over kill o_O

New 20MP FX sensor
173 autofocus points
Same processor as the D4s
Body design similar to the D4s
Currently scheduled to be announced in the second half of 2015

If you look at Nikon's track record at the high end it is remarkably consistent with the timescales for the 'Pro' launches and 2015 is spot on for the next upgrade if they follow suit. I do however take 'rumours' with a pinch of salt, as hardly had they launched the D4 and there were D5 rumours. Nikon generally do the major Pro upgrades D3, D4, etc once ever four years with an interim 's' in between. Trouble is technology advances fast these days, and 'keeping up with the Jones' or Canon etc is all part of the game.
 
There is definitely substance to this, Thom Hogan has backed the rumours up as consistent with what he know and indeed it would appear he know more regarding that AF system and has eluded to some revolutionary hybrid AF mobile and on sensor system to manage the spread of all those points.

As Ian has said, the D5 is due for a August 2015 announcement according to past track record.
 
If the focus "points" aren't only on the PDAF focusing unit but also on the sensor (ala MILFs) the numbers stack up without much effort.
