Nikon D50 for £...

And the camera itself, is it comparable (in terms of picture quality) to pentax k100d / sony a100 etc.. (excluding number of pixels as I am not interested in this)
thanks a lot

I have a d50 that i was planning to sell when i bought the d300 but it was such a good camera i couldn't bring myself to do it. I still use it when just out and about for fun sometimes, as a first dslr you won't go far wrong. I'd take one over a sony or pentax any day, but thats just my opinion others may differ.

Yes, that's a good price - the kit lens is worth about £50, so you're getting the body for around the £100 mark. I've had a couple of D50s, they're great wee cameras.

Very good deal as a first DSLR, especially with a lens. Even more so if the lens is the 18-70 rather than the 18-55. Since the D50 has the AF motor built into the body, it gives you a load more options when it comes to extra lenses than the D40(x), D60, D3000 and D5000 do. Should give decent prints up to A3 as long as you don't crop too much.

I can only echo what Shooter has already said.I also bought a D300 but there is no way that I will get rid of my D50.It is a cracking camera and gives good results even using high ISO.

the d50, d70 or somethink like the d40, will be 2nd camera to my d90, will be going for either the 50 or 70 due to both having a built in focus motor

Don't get D40 or D70/S IMHO, the D50 out handles the D70, nicer to use, and obviously has the built in motor that the D40 lacks.:)
