Nikon D5000 and MC-DC2 cable release problem

Hello newbie, I bought a Nikon D5000 recently and thought the cable release would be useful MC-DC2. So I bought one on ebay not knowing that it was a replica. But it does not do alot.

I presumed it just worked like the button on the camera. ie took pictures in any mode etc. However mine does almost nothing. I have it plugged in with the arrow next to the arrow on the camera. But in liveview pressing the button on the cable release does nothing, does not attempt to focus.

The one thing it does is if im out of liveview ie in the info window and press the cable release the screen goes blank for as long as I hold the button.

This is the one I bought and if it does not work I might as well throw it in the bin as not worth the cost to return

Hi, I am new here, so hello and thanks to anyone who responds!

I too purchase the MC-DC2, which on delivery appears to be a copy. The customer service emails are obviously from a chinese person with little grasp of english, although they have refunded me and told me to bin the remote "as faulty". I think it simply does not work with the D5000 going by your post and others I found on google.

Does anyone have an idea of one that will work? While I have an IR remote which works, and can be used in bulb mode(i think), I would prefer a wired one as the IR remote has a rather narrow beam and only works when infront of the camera.

The fact that it says "Shoot" and not Nikon on it, coupled with a price of £1.21 should have been a pretty big clue :naughty:
 
I bought a replica one (Meike) and the metal shroud on the plug came off in the camera's port. Luckily was able to get it out with a pair of pliers. Next one I buy will be Nikon.
