Nikon D5000 filters

Just use the lens hood, no need to put cheap glass in front of your lenses unless for a specific purpose i.e a circ pol or nd10.

Others will disagree and say use filters, but I don't use them and have never damaged a front element of any lens I've owned.
 
I have a UV (Hoya Pro) on my 18-55. I don't have a lens hood for it and I have tended to use it as my 'cheap' lens, i.e. if I break it can buy a new one easily. With a UV filter on it, I can use my shirt to wipe dirt or mud off of it and not worry about the glass. With the front element, I'd be concerned about grit leaving marks.

On my 35, 55-200, and 300 I have nothing. All have hoods and I use the hood 10)% of the time when the cap is off. I don't worry about damaging the front element.

Depends on your lens and how much you want to spend. Some people have put filters on (uv etc) to protect the lens, but to not affect the IQ you'd need to spend a fair amount (hoya pro level? approx 50ukp).
Mostly its piece of mind. I have one on the 11-16. I think it may soften the picture slightly, but ultra wide this usually isn't much of a problem.

The 105mm macro used to have a hoya filter (non pro) on, but the front element is recessed so I haven't bothered leaving it on.

The others dont have hoods nor filters (I am struggling to remember whether the 50mm has a filter on. I think not).

The 135mm hoya manual lens has a built in hood.

Your choice.

If you can borrow one to try you can take the same shot twice with and without to see what the differences are.

If you want piece of mind get one. The only real time you may want protection would be a beach area (flying sand?) or rally type (flying gravel?). The idea is that a filter can be knocked/scratch, broke without damaging the lens, and you can replace the filter every so often as it does get damaged. Whereas the lens front element costs a lot more to fix.


Alternatively check out something like photoguard to protect your kit. Anything bad happens you can claim back to buy more..?
 
Its all down to personal preference really - some say yaah & other's naah..

I've got Nikons NC filters fitted to my lenses (2x 77, 1x 62 & 1x 52) - I've tested each one with & without the filter & cant see any degrading to the image.. I've got em fitted for my piece of mind really...

I would recommend the Nikon NC... But then again the choice is yours, its your pennies your spending & not others..

If its the amazon linked one - then yes thats a Nikon NC filter.... or just google Nikon NC filter then select the shopping option & that will bring up the prices then you could go from there...

on my D5000 with Sigma 17-70mm i use a 72mm Hoya Pro-1 Digital MC Protector

on both 72mm lenses the front element is quite exposed .. so ''peace of mind'' really
