In a way yes any lens apart from those designed for full frame bodies will work. Only lenses with a built in motor (Nikon = AFS / Sigma = HSM) etc will auto focus the rest will be manual focus.

Actually, it works the other way around. Full frame lenses will work fine on crop sensor bodies.
The D5000 needs the focus motor built into the lens to AF, most new lenses sold now have this but older lenses might not so check before you buy. Lenses without AF motors will still work but will need to be manually focused.
any Nikon lens will work, Full frame lenses will be fine (DX lenses work OK on Nikon DX bodies, but by default force the body to crop mode, switching a large area of the sensor off)
You'll use functionality on older lenses from AF as above through metering other useful things as the lens gets older but you'll still be able to take a photo
