Can anyone please tell me why my D5000 camera changes the setting sof shutter speed and exposure all by itself when the camera is set in Manual mode, on a tripod and often after takinga photo the settings change significantly without touching the camera?
I first noticed it when I was trying to takle anight shot of a passing train and after waiting a few minutes for the train to come along the shutter speed increaed from 2 secs to 10 secs and even 30 secs, ths spoling the photo. Sorry if this seems a silly question but I am obviously still trying to get to grips with this new camera.

Erm, you are setting it to manual using the dial on the top and not just the switch on the lens arn't you?

Yes- I used the rotary switch on the top of the camera then used the thumbwheel and +/_ buttons to set speed and exposure but there was no guarntee that settings would stay the same before the shot.

Describe what setting the dial is at. What you are describing is not manual mode - if it was, the settings would stay the same, and instead the meter would be fluctuating as the light changed.

^^^???

The rotary switch that you have shown was set to 'M'.
Many thanks for all your help, it really is appreciated.
I just took a photo there just now with the switch set on M and the shuuetter speed shanged staright after taking a photo.
Hope this makes some sense.

Maybe you have turned on Auto Bracketing? That would change your shutter speed automatically after each shot, even on Manual Mode.

Just a thought?

How odd. Would a factory reset maybe help? Seems like it's confusing P with M, maybe try P and see if that should be acting like M.

That is a possibility as a few days ago I was trying to figure out how to set up auto braketing so that the camera would take thre shots to let me try HDR but I did not quite manage to do this as I had expected.
the e2 setting is set to AE and the AE bracketing set to 2.0 but I did not getthe camera to take the three shots that was expected.

Thank you very much as I think that you hit on the problem, as I have set the AE bracketing to off and taken a few shots in the 'M' mode and the settings stayed the same. So will just need to figure out how to set up the bracketing prperly and reset those setting when finished. Thanks again for your very fast reply and help to resolve this frustrating issue.

I did try thr 'P' setting which seems to respond as expected withthe settings changing if I point at different areas. - Thanks for the suggestion though as it was worth a try.

To bracket:

1) Focus manually or autofocus then switch lens to manual (stops camera from refocusing between shots)
2) Set AE bracketing to 2.0
3) Set camera to continuous shooting mode
4) either use a remote or gently touch the shutter release button and hold it down. It will then take 3 continuous images at the different exposure levels.

5) reverse what you just did to reset!

No worries. Anythings worth a try when technology is involved, it has a canny nack for doing the oppossite to what you'd want lol.
