Nikon D5000

Comparative lack? How come?

Plenty of Konica Minolta lenses that will work fine with it!

How many different lenses does one need anyway!

there is nothing like the range Nikon/Canon offer. At the moment it won't be an issue but as your photography improves you may find it becomes one

At the moment, i prefer the new Sony Alpha A290. But, like the wind's direction, that could change at anytime!! :D

So, Nikon and Canon have a massive range. How many lenses does one need?

A nice zoom, a wide angle, a macro? 3 Lenses. I am sure those can be sought for the Sony with any problems.

That depends on what you become interested in - its not about how many one has, but if the tools for the job become available

But, any job has a lens for it. Nikon and Canon have say hundreds of lenses. Out of those hundreds you will only choose what you need.

Again, i am sure one could find the right lens for the job if one bought a Sony

But inevitable, aty some point you will want a different lens, ne it telephoto/wideangle etc. And the smaller makes don't have this choice, and/or if they do, they are more expensive than comparable Nikon/Canon fits.

Have you been to a shop like Currys etc. and held them all? It's what made my mind up for me. To me the Nikon felt the best, Sony felt the worst (I've also got quite big hands so it was quite uncomfortable)

I have tried some. The Nikon does feel solid. Nice camera. D5000 looks awesome!

So when costing up lenses, if you want autofocus for the d5000 lenses need to be AF-S and then the AF will work as with other cameras ie Pentax KX? am I right?

Cheers

I believe you are correct.

2 lenses you could get that would probably set you back about £240 are the Nikon 18-70, which is superb, and the 55-200 VR. I am very pleased with those, just recently upgraded to the 70-300 VR.

What about the continuous servo tracking, can I assume this is good AF for motorsports photography?

Del

oh yes, its very fast continuous AF. It also has 3D tracking, which means the camera locks on a subject and, continues to track that particular subject regardless of where it moves. In practise, this works best with a subject that is very different tone/colour from the background.

I'm starting to realise that buying a new camera, is like buying anything else, you have to set your self a budget, don't deter from it, and buy the best you can afford.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned yet is the tilt screen on the D5000. I find it a godsend in certain situations when shooting from awkward angles without having to lie on my stomach. (Macro etc) Although I'm not sure what subjects you'll be shooting.

What I would say is that i'm more than happy with the D5000 and would recommend waiting and saving up a bit more if you haven't got the cash just yet.

May i add to this thread? What about the New Pentax K-X. Anyone rate that?
