I have bought a Nissin speedlight Di466 and Nikon remote cable SC-28.
I cannot get the flashgun to operate when connected to the camera via the cable. I have remote flash working when using the built cameraflash as a master, but would like to get the flashgun to operate with the remote cable, so the built in flash is not used. If I choose a program where flash is required and the SC-28 cable is plugged into the camera the built in flash tries to raise into position. When the flash mounted on the camera the built in flash does not try to deploy. The contacts on the flash gun are copies of the contacts on the camera and both ends of the cable. Any help gratefully accepted.

I don't think this works with the D5100.
'To use AWL, you have the following options:

  • Use your camera's built-in flash in commander mode (note that the Coolpix models, and entry level DSLRs such as D60 and D5100 do not have commander mode, and that the professional models D1 … D4 do not have a built-in flash).'
This is from this page, just under the 'Xenon Spectrum' graph about 1/3 down the page:

Hope this makes sense to you, not the easiest of reading :)

Thanks ken, have worked my way through the maze, I can understand AWL not working, but not when the flash gun is connected via a cable, I bought the cable from a well known british camera shop, so assume the cable is not faulty, and it is a Nikon cable, not an aftermarket one. Will have to contact the shop after the new year break.

Regards Andy

No doubt someone else will have the same problem, might be an idea to put the answer up here when you find out what they say.
