Nikon d5100 with PK-13 extension ring

Friend of mine is thinking of trying this combo. I know nothing about extender rings. Will it work?

I found the following from the Nikon support website, hope it helps.

Use one or multiple extension rings for further
creative capabilities. An AI NIKKOR will retain
automatic diaphragm and meter coupling functions,
letting you compose, focus and meter at a
wide-open apertures. The rings can also be used
for manual exposure control (Exposure meter
does not work with D90, D5100, D5000, D3100
and D3000).
