Hey I'm having a bit if trouble with the manual settings on my camera unless I have the flash on it always says the pictures are too dark n they just come out black or very dark! It dies this even when I'm pointing it straght towards the sun or if I point it away from it, and in very bright rooms now the only way I.can make it work is buying having it on the widest aperature and a really slow shutter speed is it me doing alleging wrong, or is it a fault with my camera I have had it scine June 2011 any idears??

By the sound of it Hayley it is just under exposed if you need or want a fastter shutter speed try increasing the ISO plus doing this you might be able to use a smaller aperture I may be wrong and ssomeone with more knowledge maybe able to give more or better info.
 
Take it out of manual and put it in aperture priority at the lowest number it will go. What are the photos like then?
Check your ISO, make sure you haven't changed it from 100 to start with.
What are you adjusting when using manual mode? When using manual, you need to adjust both the aperture and shutter speed until the camera shows you have a correct exposure in the exposure bar at the bottom of the viewfinder.
If your photos are dark, you are under exposing. If you can't get a sharp shot because the shutter speed is too slow, raise the ISO. In dim light it will need to be 400 and above.
Also bear in mind what your eye sees as bright the camera might not. In my living room, it looks bright, but I can't get a photo in here without using ISO 1600 and at least f/2.8. Even then I'm only getting a shutter speed of about 1/30th.

i am changing both shutter speed and aperture so it could be the iso i will give that ago tomorrow,

im aperture priority mode at its lowest number pictures still under exposed but the camera is telling me its right thats what i dont get

ill have anouther go tomorrow and post some of the pictures here to give you a betta understanding of what i am babaling on about
 
Pictures will help.
Could be the metering mode, what you are metering from, etc etc. impossible to say without seeing the picture and exif
 
Have a check that the aperture control lever is not bent at all - I had a similar problem with my D90 after I mounted a lens incorrectly.
There is a link on Nikons website that I will try to find for you and link to on here - back in a mo while I find it!
