Nikon d5200 and d7000

Hi guys,

I am new to nikon, always been canon and panasonic 4/3's.... I used a nikon for the first time yesterday and I loved it. My wife has a nikon aswell, which would be handy for sharing lenses etc.

I am looking at getting a 5200 but keep reading good things on a 7000 and the 7000 seems to be at a good price. I was wondering how much these two really differ in terms of quality. I'm not fussed about flip screens etc. more interested in overall camera performance between the two.

Any help would be great, as I would really like to get my new camera gear ASAP. I had planned on canon and spent ages researching what I wanted. Now I have had to start again

The d7000 is older but still a great camera. Its main benefits over the d5200 are the two command wheels (front and rear) to change aperture and shutter speed. The sensor is older but still pretty good, 16mp is still enough for most people. You probably need to read a bit more and probably a few reviews to make up your own mind about them. It depends whether functionality or sensor performance/MP is more important to you. I personally go with functionality as I couldn't go back to two a single command wheel, it would drive me crazy.

To be honest, it's no big deal in Manual to change the settings: command wheel changes shutter speed, pressing +/- on top plate and command wheel changes aperture.
Difference in megapixel is not important.
Biggest difference is in the viewfinder and focus motor in the body of the 7000- more lenses available for autofocus.

On a personnel level i dont like the 5 series but that is only personnel,i think the D5200 still has the swivel screen and its the one thing i miss with the 7xxxx

I've had canon in the past, and just changed my Panasonic G3 for a used Nikon D7000 and I'm very happy with my decision, and delighted with the quality of my photos.
I considered several canon models, as well as the 5100/5200 etc etc.
I thought I'd miss the flip/touch screen that I had on the G3, but I don't.
The first time I picked up a D7000 I wasn't sure about the "feel" as it was so much bigger and heavier than my G3, but after a few trips to currys to have a play, it started to feel "right".
Don't get me wrong, if I'd had the money, I'd have kept my G3 as a "handy" camera to chuck in a bag when not wanting to lug a heavier camera around, but then again, I love the D7000 so much, I don't think the G3 would have seen much use.
The way I looked at it, I could have bought a 5100/5200 and then may have wished I'd just went for the 7000, but wouldn't be likely to buy the 7000 then wish I'd bought the 5100/5200.

Same here, always used canon and a panasonic g3.

I'm trill undecided on canon or nikon. I have another thread in this section running that explains it more.

Basically looking like a d7000 or a 7d I think. With an outside shot for the 5200 or 60/70d

This is my first time as a Nikon user, and I'm now a true convert. I'd always thought I'd go back to Canon, but after reading loads of reviews, endless nights pouring over specs etc I decided that I was going to give nikon a try, and haven't regretted it. At the end of the day, they're all good cameras capable of producing excellent results.
