Carol - you should always get a UV / Skylight filter for each lens to protect the glass on the front.

Other than that, to start you off, if you're in bright sunshine you might want to consider a Circular Polarizer to help your saturation. Depending on what you're photographing, you may also want to look into a Neutral Density filter to help you take longer exposures in bright light...and maybe a Graduated Filter if that sort of thing takes your fancy. There are hundreds of different kinds of filters out there, but these are perhaps four of the most common types that most photographers use in some sort of combination or other.

Have a google around and see what you like the look of. The only filters I would say are essential though are the UV / Skylight filters - everything else can be added later as your skills develop.

There are two schools of thoughts on this :). There are those who advocate the use of filters, while the others believe it will affect image quality :suspect:

Personally, for protection I'd suggest you get a hood (a rubber hood is no more than £5). As for must have filter, I wholeheartedly agree, a circular polariser ... not only for sunny locations.

in Turkey, I'd second a CPL as essential to your kit. It *may* also be worth adding some ND grads and some ND filters to your kit, but its hard to answer without knowing a little more the sorts of photography you'd like to do. Those fantastic sunsets and sunrises need an ND grad
