Nikon D600 and epson R300 print problem

Hi a friend of the family has recently purchased a D600. He is having problems getting decent prints when using his epson r300, the results are coming out dark and unuseable. Any ideas of what is going wrong?

If they look okay on screen it has nothing to do with the camera. But probably with the computer/profiles/printer.
 
Thanks for the reply, I missed something off my first post that I didn't realise.

When the images were printed off a canon printer at my local camera shop the prints were fine, the main issue is with the epson r300 he uses.

So as you say must be down to the printer and or its profiles. I remember epson having issues with windows xp a few years back where they turned out dark, but I can't remember how it was sorted.
 
I had the same issue when I changed from HP to Epson - pictures that looked great printed with the HP were waaaaaay too dark when printed with the Epson and if you Google "Epson dark prints" you'll see it's a pretty common issue with 1001 different causes and fixes.

I suppose the fix depends upon how much effort you want to put into it and how professional a result you want at the end.

You could start by making sure that you profiles match your paper and that there are no obvious clashes or mistakes in print set up. The quickest fix would be to go into printer Printer Settings - Advanced Settings - and check the Gamma and increase the brightness.

As my Epson 2880 is such a pig for this I always print a small image first to check the brightness before doing a full sized print.
 
Thanks for the links, I will have to find out what windows system he is running, as all the info I have is what I have posted. From what I understand, the issues have only arisen since he brought his d600, but I could have missed something as I haven't spoke to the person myself yet.

Thanks Alan, knowing the person, he would want it top notch!
 
Another fix, if your friend is using Photoshop, would be (already assuming that the monitor has been calibrated) -

Make sure that (in the print dialogue box) that Photoshop is handling the colours and not the printer.

Ensure the printer profile is for the correct make and type of paper. If you haven't got the profile, go to the paper manufactures website and download it.

Duplicate the layer.

Change blend mode to screen.

Change opacity to 20% (a few test prints will indicate if you need to go higher or lower).

Once you're happy with that setting, you could if you wish, create an action within Photoshop to automate the process.

I have an r300 and this sorted it for me. The ridiculous prices of ink for this machine makes it much cheaper to use an online printing service imho
