Nikon D600 wide angle prime lens

I'm new to Nikon and I will probably be buying the D600 with a prime wide angle lens. I believe 24mm is the maximum length recommended for full frame to limit distortion.

I was considering the Nikon AF Nikkor 24mm f/2.8D but are there alternatives that would make better use of the D600 technology? This is cheap but the big advantage for me is the weight, about 270g - I have a shoulder injury so it's got to be good to justify me carrying it.

My budget is £400 or so. Any ideas?

Assume you meant min length but still not heard this before. What sort of distortion are you concerned about? Wide angles certainly create a bit of perspective distortion. Some will give load of barrel or pin cushion type distortion as well but this is really down to the individual lens. Some perform better than others.

Got to be honest, I've been a bit disappointed by all of Nikon's 2.8 AFD primes, including the 24mm. None of them seemed any better than 'okay' and I think particularly the 20mm and 24mm are a bit overpriced in relation to their performance.

I haven't tried one yet, but I have my eye on a 28mm 1.8g AF-S, a little heavier than the 24mm 2.8 but still quite a light lens. Reviews generally very positive indeed.

You could also look at some of the manual focus AIS options as some of them are absolute gems and will last forever!
 
Thanks for the instant replies, I'll take a look at that lens. I should have mentioned what I'll be shooting, with this lens most of the time it will be street scenes.
 
I'm not sure where I heard that 24mm was the recommended minimum length - I've seen this on Wikipedia describing ultra wide angle lenses as "For 35 mm film or full-frame sensor any lens shorter than 24 mm" but as regards minimising distortion I'm not sure where I picked up that info.

There are a few reviews of the 28mm lens and it sounds good so I may well make that choice. Thanks for your help.

I guess that is referring to perspective distortion in that really wide lenses can make stuff look a lot further away than they actually are. Estate agent photographers have known this for years which is why you go to view what you think is a mansion only to find a pokey little hovel! I digress. It's really a personal preference though, I wouldn't think you'd have any worries at the sort of lengths being discussed here unless you intend to take any really close up portraits.

For street photography, better to go with 35mm. This will open up more choices including some manual focus gems like Samyang and Zeiss etc.,;)
 
Check out the sigma 12-24 F4.5-5.6 lens as its a FX lens and has a remarkably small amount of distortion at both ends.
