Just remember to set the aperture on lens to f22 or whatever the highest setting is, and it will AF. Keep the lock pin in when set, as you can knock them out of position and you would have ERR codes.

First of all the camera will still autofocus even if it's showing FEE. Secondly just set "Customise command dials" to use the aperture ring rather than the command dial on the body. That's what it's there for.

I think we answered the OP question, but...............I don't currently have a "D" lens, but when I had my last fifty I had the problem (FEE), so looked on Nikon website and set to lens aperture to f22 and it worked fine. My camera then was a D7000 and it wouldn't auto focus unless the aperture was set to f22. The camera wasn't recognizing the lens. I currently use the scroll wheels for setting my aperture, shutter speed on my current camera, so know why their there for.
