Nikon D70 underexposing

A friend is having problems with his D70 which is underexposing badly. Any ideas of settings that may be effecting it as I can't work out a Nikon!

Press the two buttons on the top RHS that have green symbols next to them. Press them at the same time for a few seconds and this will reset to standard settings.

Sou ds like some exposure compensation has been dialled in, assuming the meter is showing a correct exposure in the viewfinder?

Is there a little + and - square symbol on the top screen?

Just behind the shutter release there is a button with + and - on it. Hold and rotate one of the wheels and it should go up or down.

Thanks for the suggestions - I check exposure comp and none was dialed in. Even putting in two stops of +ve ev comp the results were still underexposed. I have recommended that he do a factory reset in case he has accidentally put some odd setting on so hopefully that will solve it!
