Nikon haven't dropped anything with this one. The lens is big and casts a sadow from the onboard flash. Its far from the only lens cobmination to do this. I think the only questionable decision Nikon made with the onboard flash for the D700 was to leave it there in the first place

Why not leave it there. If it poses a problem with big lenses don't use it. And if a situation arises that you need it, use it. Would you rather not have a flash when you need it or have a flash when you don't need it (onboard that is)?

I haven't seen a D700 in months, our store isn't deemed important enough.

So if you'd like to disable the on board flash, surely just don't pop it up?
Is it me or is this just not rocket science?
