Nikon D700 focusing issues

Hi all
Still a bit of a newbie so bear with me?! Intermittently (and increasingly often) I'll have camera in manual and on, for eg, f4 and will be focusing when it changes without reason to f0 and won't adjust using dial; this week it did so repeatedly then yesterday jumped to f0 then f95 (really, 95 not 9.5 or anything reasonable) ... so, clever forumites, any idea what's happening/ what am I doing wrong? Cheesed off as I was on school visit and missed loads of good shots (nice pure black frames!!) Thank you in advance! 

Those are error codes, if you google D700 Error Codes you will get loads of info on the different ones.

I think f0 is where the lens is not communicating with the camera, generally the contact pins need cleaning, can often be resolved by releasing and re-seating the lens once or twice.

Sometimes the spring loaded pins on the lens can stick in a little which prevents contact with the camera body.

Best thing to clean them with is the little rubber on the end of a pencil, just make sure you keep the bits out of the lens.
