OK, as an ex Canon guy eventually aiming for for Nikon 24-70mm and 70-200mm and the 200mm Vr having fallen through.....biding my time ;), here are my purchases so far:

Sigma 50-500mm EX DG - loved the 100-300mm and 120-300mm on Canon. Found one of these mint and boxed for £450, it's a big beasty and so far been pleasantly surprised by sharpness. Zoom ring is a bit of a pain though!

Tamron 28-75mm is coming from SDB123 - had one of these on a Canon a bang for buck its hard to beat.

Out of left field comes......

Tokina 100mm macro - always had a soft spot for Tonks and was after a macro....found one of these minty for £240 so took the plunge.

Will let you know how I go......at these prices I figure I can try them and move them on relatively pain free if they dont suit. ;)

I've found the Tamron to be an excellent walkabout lens; it's pretty sharp and the constant F/2.8 aperture is great if you want shallow DOF or are struggling in low light. Mine is the motorised version (needed for use on my spare D40 body) and does tend to hunt just a little, when the light goes down :|.

Still, at 260GBP brand new, there was just no way that I could pass up trying it, when the Nikon 24-70mm that I really wanted had just gone up in price to over 1,200GBP ! Hope you are as happy with yours ;).

Can't say I've tried any of the others on my D700, but Puddleduck is surely "yer man" for all such questions .

Well if you ever want to move the Tokina 100mm on...let me know! They are like rocking horse doo-doo on the used market. :(

Yes £1200 for a zoom lens is my definiton of staggeringly expensive.:cuckoo:

Ebay.......as you say, pretty rare, you'll get first refusal if I decide to move it on Steve.

I used the Sigma 50-500 recent and having tried 3 before, I actually found one that is semi-decent (which I borrowed from a friend). Its quite good given the range.

The Tamron 28-75 is excellent, try to find one without a motor, the motorised version is very slow compared to the previous model on a semi-Pro or Pro body.

The Tokina 100mm is excellent, beautiful built quality, but with a tendancy to purple fringe wide open.

I'm not really keen on the Bigma, but the other two choices are pretty sound.

Thanks Puddleduck. If the 50-500mm drives up the wall, any other suggestions. shame Nikon don't do a Canon 100-400mm match. I dont appear to have £5k knocking around for a 200-400mm!!!!

120-300mm Sigma f2.8 will be my fall back until the 200mm VR arrives ;-)

Good find. :)

I fear you'll love it....

:D

100mm Tokina got a try out today.......:D:lol: what a cracker!!!! Steve I think you might be right!!!!

Love the AF/MF way of switching, faster focus and crisp clear images on my 700D, compares well to all macros I have used inc 180mm L Canon!
