Not a pretty image I know
More of a technical example really
It's actually one of the first images I've taken with my new D700. I've only got my 50mm lens down here in London (was on my D50 down here) so didn't have much choice. Anyway, what I wanted to show was how great the cam is at ISO6400. The zoomed-in section is actually a 100% crop from the image.
Yes, I know it's noisy, but you didn't expect miracles did you? There's no Noise reduction done at all here, not in-camera, and there's no post-pro at all, straight out of camera. Yes, I could have used a wider aperture, got more light and less apparent noise. I also left the camera to meter, which was relatively tricky considering the expanse of bright sky above the fountain too.
Personally I think ISO6400 on the D700 matches the D300's ISO3200 mode, which i'm more than happy about as once I get home there's a nice 24mm f/2.8 waiting for me which i'm dying to put through it's paces at night in the country
Oooh and it was sooo nice getting to see my 50mm actually working at 50mm and not 75mm like it has on all my other nikon's
Another feather in the D700's cap is that brilliant switch which covers the viewfinder, won't make much sense to many of you, but for us night photographers, it stops any light leaking in from behind the camera without having to attach the little rubber thing on your strap
