I just wanted to know the opinion from D700 owners about this camera, I'm struggling with low light photography with my D90 and I'm seriously considering upgrading it, I have shot with both D700 and D3 before and they're amazing cameras but I couldn't take it with me and test it properly, I own a Nikon 24-70 f/2.8 which is awesome but having it on a crop sensor seems like a waste most of the time and I'm constantly having issues with it not being wide enough(it is my widest lens).

I'm thinking of selling the camera and the lens(to fund thee d700) and sticking with a D700+50mm 1.4, or maybe keeping the 24-70. what are your(d700 owners) views on this setup? How much can you really push the iso and get clean images? I'm gonna try to borrow my friends' D700 and do some testing but I also want to read tp'ers opinions.

D700 is perfect for lowlight situations, the only thing better is the D3s.

As for selling the 24-70, fair point; but to go with a D700 & 50 f/1.4 only, why not just get the 35 f/2 to go with your D90 and keep your 24-70? 35 f/2 can be bought 2nd hand for a very reasonable smallish amount.

Personally - I think that you have answered your own question....

If you can borrow your friends D700 then do so & try out your lenses on it & then you can see for yourself if you should keep or sell the 24-70 or the 50mm....

No doubt someone else will have a different opinion thou...

I had a go with a D700 before I sold my D300s & my Nikon "beast" (28-70) for the D700 & a 24-70...
 
If you are thinking of buying a D700, the best lens for it is the 24-70 IMO

I can get clean usable shots without issue at ISO 3200. I could go higher, but you start to loose a little detail but its certainly not that noisy.
I pretty much leave auto ISO on when Im indoors and have it set to ISO 1600 max, and Im not afriad of it using 1600 when it needs to.

Probably depends on what you'll shoot.
Folk rave about the 24-70. I had one on my D700 and it was good. I traded it in and got a 28-300 Nikkor and have absolutely no regrets. It has become a permanent fixture on my D700. However, maybe f2.8 max aperture is important to you.
 
I'm set on going FX, just need to decide how I'll do it, I initially thought of selling the 24-70 to help fund it, but then I'll have to keep using the 50mm 1.8 and 70-300 until I can get the 1.4, so thats my main problem right now, If I get a reasonable price for the gripped D90 I might keep the 24-70, I'll break the bank but never mind! Either way the D90 is going, my work is nowhere near good but I'm feeling the limitations of the dx format.

Appreciate everyones help, I'll so some thinking and shall be posting soon(hopefully) about my new purchase.
 
I got the D700 primarily because of it's low light capabilities, and nearly 2 years on it still impresses me. I've used it a lot in low light, and with a fast or VR lens, it's awesome. This was handheld at ISO6400, and is probably comparable to my old D70 at about ISO800 or so. OK, so it's not totally 'clean' but certainly not inoffensive, but a quick dose of noise nija would tidy it up

One minute your saying that you have a 50mm 1.4 then your saying that you have the 50mm 1.8...

:thinking: Is it the 1.8 or 1.4 or have I totally lost the plot here.......... :shrug:
 
keep the 24-70 in my opinion. you would be mad to keep the 50mm over that lens. i've shot at 6400 getting shots i'm more than happy with. expose correctly though or it might be a problem.
 
From my research, the benefits of the D700 are purely low ISO and better bokeh . In good light I doubt you could see a discernable difference in IQ between a D700 / D90 with similar glass at F5.6 and beyond. Everyone who buys a D700 seems to have a 24-70 f2.8 and similar pro expensive glass which helps to perpetuate things.

I think he wants to sell the D90, 24-70 and his 50mm f/1.8 and buy a D700 and 50mm f/1.4

Yes I thought about selling the D90+24-70. Use the D700 with the 50mm 1.8 I currently own until I have enough again to buy the 50mm 1.4, my bad for complicating things.



There are quite a lot of people on flickr who produce superb shots with just the D700 and 50/1.8 and when you think about it this combination is where traditional 35mm photography all started but this is the first time a digital version has been achievable.

I'd use this as my starting point and build from there.

I've been looking through some photos here taken with the D700 and all sorts of lenses and I have seen some amazing results

Surely it would be better to sell the D90 & 50mm - keep the 24-70 for the D700....

A match made in heaven - as they say...

Then again its your decision at the end of the day & only you know your circumstances with regards to funding the upgrade...
 
I love my D700's. Primary motivation for buying was/is the outstanding low light performance. I shoot a lot of indoor Equestrian at 6400 ISO
I get very acceptable results.
Find a way to keep the 24-70!
 
I've put photographs in albums at iso 5,000 and have very few reservations about going there. Nail the exposure and you gt a perfectly acceptable image

I'm gonna try to get a decent deal on the rest of my equipment and hopefully keep the 24-70, at the end of the day I would probably end up saving for another one in the future anyways :bonk:

Are the photos in your 365 shot on the D700?
 
Quick update; I went for it :P kept the 24-70 and bought the D700, havent gone outside to test it yet but I've been going around the house turning lights off and shooting indoors :P , I must say I'm impressed! very clean images at any ISO I throw at it!! Can't wait to try it in the real world :)
 
You dont have to turn the lights off. It works pretty well in good light too :lol:
 
But then wheres the fun? :lol:

On a serious note, I know that! Coming from a D90 I didnt expect any less, Just wanted to see where this will take me in the long run.

I almost done the same - but I was shootin down an unlit hallway :lol:

It just had to be done... Esp if we dont venture out much :lol:
 
Oh Im not saying I havent done it!!:lol:

Infact I put the ISO on Hi2 the other day just to see how dark I could get the room and still take photos :cuckoo:
