I have a Nikon d7000,and i am having nightmare issues with focusing,most of my shots are coming out "soft" or out of focus even though i know i have my focus point on what i am photographing correct,i have read about back focusing,and i have also tried using fine tune,but still the problem remains,i have had this camera for a while now and i have to say i am bitterly dissapointed,my d3100 took way better shots.Anyone else experienced this??

Yes I had the same - all my d7000 brought was better functions and a built in motor not IQ
I had back focus issues - all lenses required fine tuning, see below post 3256 and on

My D7000 got worse at backfocusing over time, common problem apparently. Not really detectable on the viewfinder, and impractical to pixel peep during a fast paced shoot. After a full service it was back to correct focus....

This is a well know issue with certain batches, There is quite a lot of information within this very large thread. I have not had any issues with focusing myself but quite a few other people have.

If you shoot raw then any in camera settings won't have an effect on the image anyway other than the jpeg preview on the screen. Have you tried the auto focus fine tune and is it just the one lens it is happening with? If so then the lens may need a service or maybe the camera does? Maybe a phone call to your local camera shop could help?

The D7000 AF system is a lot more advanced than what's in your D3100. It's possible it has a back focusing problem but if you don't know how to use the AF system to how it should be then that could be the cause of soft imahes too...
I'd go through the following.
1. Determine if the fault is still there when focusing manual.
Yes? - increase in camera sharpness. If that sorted it then your picture mode was the reason, if not and no part of the image is sharp, get it checked out.
Determined the camera produces sharp images but not focusing - change to single point and check again.
Focused correctly? - more practice with the mode you were in before.
Not focused correctly? Fine tune.
Not sharp after fine tune?
Get it checked.
It goes without saying to check different lenses to determine if it's the lens at fault before any of the above.
I had a fault with my AF focus screen...got it changed and has been fine since.
