Nikon d7000 or d300s

Looking to sell all my canon gear and have a dable with the dark side :naughty:

Been looking at the d7000 & d300s but not sure which to go for if i decide to go nikon, any advice on these models and which you would you go for and why???

I shoot mainly portraits & landscapes/airshows.

Personally I'd go with the D7000 as it has better ISO performance and I like shooting with natural light.

In your situation (i.e. decent lighting) you may appreciate the better build, weather sealing and FPS of the D300s.

Swings and roundabouts really...

If you're thinking of buying new, I'd go for the D7000. I just can't see the value in a new D300S when a near identical used D300 can be had for £400 these days. I personally love the bigger 'pro' bodies so something like a D300 would always be my choice, I just wouldn't want to pay £1000 for one or whatever they cost these days.

As Ned says it ultimately comes down to bang up to date technology in a smaller body or older tech (though still very decent) in a larger body with the all the additional controls that brings.
 
mate looking at your equipment you have a stellar lineup on lenses etc. considering that rig you have you may be in for a world of disappointment
 
Just my 2p. The AF performance (accuracy, lock-on speed, tracking) of the D7000 is not in the same league as the D300(s). The D300 has the best AF of any camera I've used, it uses the same 51point 3d system as the D3. The D7000 doesn't have this luxury.

My thoughts entirely.

I don't think you'll be dissatisfied with either.

To sum it up : you have better iso / more dynamic range / slightly better IQ and much better video vs better build and ergonomics / faster fps / better autofocus...

For me the ISO was always going to.come in more handy than anything else, just decide on your priority and go with it.

Agreed, though the D7000 is no slouch with af especially tracking birds in flight or rally cars. My experiences with it was fantastic I just needed to tune a few of my wide aperture primes after being a pixel peeper :(

The poor guy has to sell his FF gear though so no choice and if your going to aps-c then nikon is the way to go if he wants anything like the iso performance of his 5d mk2. I feel he would be more disappointed going with the equiv Canon.

As i know your on a budget i would personally go with the d5100 its the same image sensor as the d7000 but almost half the price. and maybe a second hand tamron 17-50mm non vr f2.8. Probably get the both for the same price as the d7000.

Looking at your camera bag at the moment with the Canon 5D mk2 and bunch of L glass, why not just buy a D700 and 1-2 quality glass nikon glass?

I have a D300 and I have also used a d7000 quite a bit and i wouldn't swap my D300 for one, I found the focus just not as good as the 51 point system in the D300. I also prefer the chunkier feel and the magnesium alloy body of the D300 and secondhand they are a bargain! :-)
 
As with any camera purchase, I'd say go and play with each camera, if you can, in a shop to see which one feels 'right'.

I would always choose the D300/S over a D7000, but then that works for me. I wanted the best all round camera I could get, and the D300/S is that for me. I do Landscape, Sports, Night photography, and a bit everything else. ;)

The D300/S has the best AF, which may be not that important for Portraits, could come in handy for air shows. And rock solid build quality, and great ergonomics imho. The D7000 is in no way flimsy, but the D300/S seems more 'solid'.

The D7000 has a larger dynamic range and is better at higher ISOs, which could be a benefit for Landscape and Portraits. :shrug:

Like I said, go to a shop and compare them. :shrug:

The aim here guys is for him so save some money. He is selling the 5d because he needs the cash. d300's are selling for about £200 less than the 5d's. If he was to sell it on ebay over £100 of that would go on fees.
 
Just to point out a really annoying feature about the D7000 - the af points aren't spread out across the whole frame which. I do find this a design fault and would have preferred fewer points over more of the frame.

If af is a big thing for you and your shooting style means you are relying on as much of the frame focusing, this would bug you.

I was answering which camera, which was the original question. And I don't see where the OP said he changing to save money. :shrug:

If the aim is to save money, then aim for 2nd hand. You could still hopefully go into a shop to check out the handling of the cameras, depending on which cameras the choice is between.

And depending on how much the OP has to spend, will determine what compromises will need to be made with the camera. Also, the lens choices for Portraits, Landscapes and Air shows is not going to be done with one lens. :shrug:
 
If most of your shots are in good light say below iso 800 the D300 is OK if you need to go beyond that the the D7000 is quiet a bit better. On the plus side the D300 has very good AF and is very well built and is better than the D7000 in both those respects.

He can probably sell the 5D mkii and put either no extra or tiny little extra for the D700, then he can sell all his canon glass and L glass to fund possible 2-3 Nikon Pro glass. If he buy all used then he won't need to put too much money into it, it just take time to sell and buy.

He been shooting 5D mkii for some time now and he can change to D7000 he will find it very small unless you prefer to downgrade with smaller kit otherwise D300 will give him to size he want but D700 will give him similar to his 5D mkii because of FF sensor, camera size.

Yeah sorry guys to fair he was talking about his money issues on a different thread you were not to know. He is however selling the gear as he needs the money.

I have to agree with Sammi, go for the D300s.

I had a play with a D7000 recently and the general feel and the way it handles the focussing leaves a lot to be desired when comparing it to the D300/s which has a far more solid feel to it.
 
holiday and landscape stuff i prefer my D7000 then D300. But work wise i.e wedding, sports etc i like my D300 alot with my pro glass.
 
I would choose the D300 too. But, i would also say stick with the Canon!
