Nikon D7000 Repair, fix or scrap help ..

Hi there,

I just sent in my Nikon D7000 for a repair, I had left it on a table infront of a window on a hot day then it was getting an F0 error and not adjusting they just got back to me with a £305 repair estimation...

Fit new spare parts Repair, replace and adjust printed circuit board. Firmware upgrade to the latest version Metering, shutter and exposure accuracy checked - recalibrated if necessary. Image capture, playback and delete functions checked. X-sync, hot shoe and speedlight function checked. Body depth, body focus, AF accuracy checked and recalibrated if necessary. Image Sensor, optics, mirrors, and viewfinder cleaned. Firmware version checked and updated if required. It's probably a stupid question but with the service fee and shipping back on the decline being around £65 is it best to just recycle it for free? Go ahead with the fix? or get the camera back and sell it for spare parts, I really don't know what to do I expected it to cost under £100, a new body is costing around £350 I think, is this camera even worth getting back?

There'll be other used ones about at other dealers but it looks like your camera is possibly a write off.

Bad luck... but hope you can find one a bit cheaper.

Unless it's a very high mileage example; if the shutter count is high, you're getting back an old but refurbished camera, you could probably do better buying 2nd hand. But if it's a low shutter count example, you're effectively getting a new camera.

The main parts to fix
  • TOGO PCB UNIT - Cost - £166.00
  • 1H998-164 F-F0 PCB UNIT - Cost- £12.60
  • 1H998-161 LENS CONTACT FPC UNIT - Cost- 10.06
Not sure what it all means, the labor is £65.00 and tax is around £50.00. If I recycle it there is no £65 fee, without these working parts, If i was to get the body back what would it sell for, in my mind I am imaging £5 or something, so would you recycle it and move on, fix it and sell to get the money back. Or fix and keep. I know a new D7000 body is only worth £300 now. I wouldn't really replace it if my camera had been stolen, I would have put the money to something else, to learn something new.... not sure if I should care to even get it back I think it's some kind of sentiment going on.

If I was to scrap it and move on can you recommend a Canon alternative body and a lens that would suit for products, clothing, body shots etc.

Phil do you think these repairs are from over use? I have taken hundreds of thouands of photos with the camera if not more?

Simple answer No.
But if you really have taken hundreds of thousands of images, it's almost certainly not worth the repair fee, you'll be getting back a camera with many new parts but the one 'most likely' to fail (the mirror box / shutter mechanism) will be well worn. You might be paying £300 for a camera that'll fail a month later.
 
My d7000 is available in the f/s section with only 12k clicks, for £215.

Oh wait I've noticed you've only just joined so you don't have access to the f/s section. Sorry!
 
According to Nikon, the shutter on the D7000 should be good for 150,000 actuations, so by the sounds of it could well be at the limit of it's lifespan like Phil has suggested
 
get it back and whack it onto e/bay as spares or repairs you will definetly get back a lot more than your expecting ,getting yours repaired for that amount is just not worth doing

Not so sure about that, would need to get at least £80 as spares or repair to make it worth paying £65 to get it back (accounting for eBay fees etc), can't see a non working D7000 sell for that amount
